We hear about giving hubs that special book for his wedding present, but is it right for you? We asked Christina Dunnigan, owner and photographer at Christina Dunnigan Photography and The Private Collection, all about boudoir.
What exactly is boudoir?
Boudoir is actually a very diverse genre of photography in that it can encompass everything from beauty to fine art to pin-up to erotica. For me, I love making women feel empowered and beautiful and boudoir photography is how I do that. It can be very modest or it can be risqué, but it is always fun, uplifting, and empowering according to my clients. I love using my photography to help women fall just a little bit more in love with themselves and walk away feeling like they can take on the world.
What’s so special about a bridal boudoir session?
This is such a special moment in a woman’s life and I fully believe that you should document as much of it as possible. If you think about it, you put all of this effort into making this one day perfect, why not spend a little bit of that effort on yourself rather than just the big day? Go get a mani/pedi and relax from the planning for a bit. Then come see me and my team and let us get you all dolled up and capture you as the beautiful bride that you are. It’s also makes a great gift for your soon-to-be spouse…*wink*
Why should I do a boudoir session? My husband’s going to see me every day anyways….
That’s true, but wouldn’t it be fun to give your spouse a gift on your wedding day that is a secret between just the two of you? Give him a little reminder of what’s waiting for him on the honeymoon and everyday afterwards? I’ll tell you from personal experience, it’s absolutely fun, and the photos that my wedding photographer captured of him opening his gift from me were some of my favorites from the day! Let’s just say he was pleasantly surprised!
Above all, do it for you. When was the last time that you had pictures taken just of yourself? Maybe your senior year? Have something, a keepsake, of yourself at this milestone in your life. Before you know it, it’ll be time for maternity pictures, then family pictures, and oftentimes after that we women disappear from pictures all together, because we are the one’s taking the pictures. Do this for you just as much, if not more than, your reason for doing it for your spouse.
What is included with your boudoir session?
My full sessions include up to two hours of session time, so that we can go at our own pace and you can enjoy the experience. Before we get to the session though, we will sit down together to plan out all of the details from hair and makeup to wardrobe to the overall style that you are looking for. When it’s time for the session all you need to do is show up and have fun! I also include makeup application and hair styling by my team of licensed professional hair and makeup artists and use of the wardrobe items in my client closet. Best part is that you can view your images in just a few hours, so you may be able to see them that same day!
But I don’t have the body for boudoir….
Let’s be real for just a moment. We’ve all seen the commercials and ads for Victoria’s Secret and those models are beautiful. They’re sexy and they are darn good at their job, because they make me want to buy whatever underwear they’re selling even though Victoria’s Secret doesn’t carry my size. That’s just it though. They are doing their job. They are selling underwear.
Now go look at a Torrid or a Lane Bryant ad. Are those models not beautiful? Are they not sexy? Are they not selling underwear too? They are still all of those things even though their bodies are very obviously different.
Society has told us what beauty and sex appeal is. That’s not the truth. That’s what they’re selling. You are beautiful. You are sexy. And you know what? You have captured the love of the person you are going to spend the rest of your life with. I guarantee if you ask them, they’ll tell you that you’re beautiful and sexy and they can’t wait to wake up next to you every day.
As a plus-size woman, myself, I understand the struggles that we women deal with every day. We often look at ourselves in terms of our “flaws” rather than our assets. I use your favorite assets (along with your future spouse’s favorite assets) in combination with lighting, posing, and wardrobe to help you see yourself in a more positive light. Celebrate those curves (or lack thereof), because honey, YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!
